According to MyNIC’s announcement earlier today:
MYNIC is pleased to announce that the Priority Entry period for MYNIC’s
shorter addressing (shorter suffix - .my) option via second level domain name
(2LD), will start from 9am 1 November 2007 to 5pm 31 December 2007.We would like to highlight that only active third level domain names
registered up to 5pm 26 October 2007 are eligible to apply during this
time, subject to terms and conditions. In cases where there are multiple applications for the same second level
domain name (http://www.mynic.net.my/newhp/2ld-faq.html#2-5) priority will
be given to the registrant with the earliest registered third level domain
name.

What this means is that MyNIC is giving the priority to existing .com.my (or equivalent, ie .net.my, .org.my, etc) domain owners to register their .my counterpart because MyNIC is going to allow the public to register .my domain names somewhere next year. So if you own a registered third-level domain (eg: yourorganization.com.my), you will have the priority to register your .my counterparts (eg: yourorganization.my) starting from today up till 31st December, before someone else are allowed to register that .my domain name.
Why is this important?
If you are an established company, you will want to protect your organization’s trademark. You wouldn’t want someone else to register the domain name similar to your organization’s domain name and use it for something else. They might forge a false image on your company in the website they built under the .my domain name which looks like yours. They might redirect the domain to some place which may hurt your company’s credibility. Security speaking, they might create a similar website like your .com.my site, and use it as a phishing site to steal your customer’s information and credentials. Therefore, it is always a good idea to keep your similar domains to be owned by your organization.
With that said, we have added a .my domain as a new option in our ordering system. The cost for registering a .my domain will be at RM100/year until further notice. So don’t wait until someone else grabs your domain name, register today!
